A letter to a Kenyan Sexual Minority.
Dear Kenyan sexual minority,
The world has watched as your president labled you as a non-issue! Even if he said his government is committed to Human rights for all its citizens, it's not for citizens like you...
Even if you wake up every morning, spend all your day at work, pay your taxes, help your communities, contribute to charities, help out the poor, so long as your sexual orientation is not straight you are a non-issue...
Even if he said he will commit to protecting the girlchild and support women, if you are a woman of sexual minorities, that was not for you, you are a non-issue...
But, hold up, hold up those pills you are about to swallow, hold back the rope.. No don't jump over the bridge cos you know what? You are an issue, that's why that question came up, cos there was an issue.. An issue being ignored and banned down because of many other issues including religion and cultures..
You know what, there are lots of non-issues in the history of human rights that are issues today and in line well with not everyone but majority.
Sometime back, black people were not considered humans but slaves,
Not long ago, that marriages between black and whites were forbidden! Look at all the beautiful cappuccinos that are all over the world from these marriages and relationships! Including the most powerful man in the world! Come on.. Hold up those pills....
Not long ago in your very own cultures and religions that women were not considered anything than housewives and under the male dominance! Women in many countries were not even legally allowed to apply for jobs..Look at all these powerful women now.. They are issues! They fought hard... Come on..Don't jump over that bridge..
Not long ago, they was apartheid in SA, where everyone was not equal,
Not long ago we feared people living with Aids because we thought they were outcasts and we thought they would give us the disease, look how we hug them now:-)
Not long ago people hid their disabled children and were embarrased to show them in Public. Albinos were largely discriminated, things has changed now..
I feel sad for you, I feel horrible that you have to live in a place where you are regarded a non-issue but hold on, because of this fight today, even if you don't ever live to see it! One day it will be an issue to the generations to come..
Not many lived to see the first black president in America! Even if they fought so hard to be recognized as equal! And believe they are also millions who fought againist that!
You are an issue, you are important, the people close to you, your family, friends, support groups, partners..do know that you are an issue, I know you are an issue, nobody should bring you down and make you feel less important..
Hold on... Buckle up, be kind, love is the greatest commandment of them all, obey the traffic lights, pay your taxes, help the poor, live life, stay safe! One day this will become an issue so strongly that it will be a non-issue
Love me.
