Black woman's hair! Look but do not touch!

came across this advert on Facebook and my brain boiled up! My first reaction was why? Why would anyone pay 2000 ksh and VIP 4000 ticket to sit and chitchat about natural hair? I mean whats the VIP ticket for cos if you can afford 2000 for hair chat event!, you can truelly afford 4000.

After much amazement and thought, i figured they are up for a tough task! And well intended for that matter, so just forget my first paragraph!, except for the prizes! It should have been free, because only a certain class of women can afford that and if you are trying to encourage a majority.. Well....

I imagine their intentions are to encourage black women to go back to their beautiful natural look and to come, see and find some encouragement on going natural and letting out their Jezebel! I mean their AFRO's!

What is so special about black hair that women are being encouraged to keep it natural! To be honest! Nothing! The problem is, you will hardly find 1 out 10 women walking the streets in Afirca flaunting their AFRO's, why? Because we lost a piece of us as we grew up! We heard loud screams on school mornings cos combs wouldn't go through the hair! It was a painfull experience for us as kids to sit in salon braiding hair! They told us 'Mwendi uthaka ndachayaga'.(meaning if you want to be beautiful, no cries!). So we sat there doing silent cries and watched in envy as the white women just ran a brush through their silky beautiful hair! And that's how the Disaster came about! The Weave/ Wig was born!💀

We flocked salons! We made weave producers and distributers multibillionares and at the same time lost our beautiful hairs! We sadly assumed the universe had come to save us from our entangled hard wire mesh on our heads! We burnt our scalps with chemicals to get silky hairs, we thinned out hair, we watched in horror as weaves swept out the AFRO's, as weaves dangled and smelt under the scorching sun! As the wigs embarrased our women and fell off in public, we heard the men say they like it better silky, we heard them say we were prettier! We lost Afro's and did what the people thought was better! It saddens me!

Today, as the dreadslocks and AFRO's begin to emerge, I am excited for the comeback! And so I will take on to encourage the campaign and tell the young girls their AFRO's are beautiful! It's you!

But please don't forget world! Don't touch my Afro especially out or in an event! I will dodge like you are a bullet! See with your eyes! Appreciate me! Because I took several days to prepare for that outcome! I stressed my partner with my hair drama! I watched countless videos on YouTube and read millions of blogs on how to maintain my Afro! On how to apply egg(yack!) and avocado to grow my hair cos it drags on for years, I had uncomfortable nights with rollers on my head! And your one touch, a second will take me back to square 1! Hear my cry! DO NOT TOUCH MY HAIR! Lol!

Now women in Nairobi, go chit chat and learn about all of it! And don't forget to keep the blogs and YouTube videos coming... Hahaha😀

  1. We Africans look absolutely stunning with our natural hair. I'm a big advocate for natural beauty but I only do this by serving as an example. I feel absolutely comfortable with my hair and I cannot have it any other way. It's liberating! We are trying to achieve with weaves what women of other race have naturally. I have not seen any other race buying Afro weaves except for maybe a circus or halloween... and even then it's rare. This has become a very sensitive topic... the society's standard of beauty is long hair light skin... everything is strategically placed because it's all a big business. If there are no flashes of lightness everywhere there would be no hair and bleaching cosmetics business. So our insecurities have created a niche and billions of dollars. If you turn down the sound and look and listen...the "white world loves and affirms itself and we are on constant erasure of our BLACKNESS.
