The age difference between my Africa and my Europe😄
I write this with utmost honesty. Our ribs have hurt everytime this discussion has come up and believe me it has come up for as many times and with lots of different people from both continents.
If you have never sat and had this discussion in a way that you stripped your childhood times naked, let me tell you the funny bits about the age difference of my continents..
I remember when i would tell my European friends and classmates the stories of my life, and in their eyes, i could see this sadness or i put it as pity, or did they even believe me? they were polite enough to just nod than just tell me they don't get it because i narrated to them the stories their grandmothers narrated about their childhood.
It was not until i started working, met and made friends with all kinds of agegroups that i realised i could well be 60 in Europe, storywise i mean. My 30 year old European friends have no understanding of my childhood. My story was flowing swiftly and melodiously with the older generation.
I was born not far away from the Capital of my beautiful motherland, but yes, i have lived a life that we used lamps, those tunyitera(tell me how to explain them to mzungu) you would hold it on one hand and cover it with the other as you crisscrossed to the 'big house' to get salt or tea leaves, war onto you if it was raining and it went off! Matches finished?, you will use your sense of touch to bring out that salt.
Tell me about black and white TV era, those small ones on battery that sometimes we were forced to keep off so that there would be enough battery powers for my dad to watch wrestling and news! They was no choice, the whole family plus the neighbors had to all love the same episodes and for us, wrestling, news and all those sunday programmes like No one but you were the priorities! Those were the days that TV actually brought people together! Our house was forever full!. , And can you believe it, my aunt beat us by buying a coloured screen that she fixed ontop of the black and white screen!😂! It was funny because all people in all programmes were the same colour😂😂😂, but do I say! So my dad had to beat that! He bought the actual coloured 42'inch! Yawa! We did not sleep! We felt connected to the world! Thereafter football games and Jackie chan movies depressed me for the rest of my childhood life😂😂
Things have come a long way where I come from, and brought lots of fun times and funny stories to our young age! I am glad I went through those times though!. A million of them can't fit in this blog , I will tell you about our first mobile phone later!
Ohh my Africa.! Imagine how fast we have caught up with the world!
