Work Smiling, Happy and Healthy:-)
Some weeks ago i attented this work seminar about happy and healthy working. I had such a wonderful day that i felt the need to share it out and who knows, we might end up loving our jobs more or i might end up brightening someone's day and hopefully help in the situation with job disatisfaction. Let's be honest, not everyone loves their jobs(some are there because bills have to be paid or there was no other job available), and even if you love your job, not everyday you jump out of bed excited to go to work. I love my job but sometimes it takes real pushing to go to work. The other day, i was running to change after my shift, i ran past this woman and said bye, and she asked, are you always running like this to work in the mornings too?, i just smiled. Ha! you bet!! I applaud everyone who has worked same job, same office, same people for over 10 years, wow! It takes patience for such. well, here are some tips i learnt that day and been putting them into practice. Let's try them out.
Ascertain work goals: First things first, once you get a job, it's important to have a session with your boss and discuss the goals, get to know the goals that the company wants to achieve. Have your own goals as an individual and discuss them with your boss. Let them know how they can help you achieve your goals as much as they give you their expectations. When you start like this, you are planned and have something you are working towards achieving. If you don't have any goals, you are better off jobless, you just end up being a liabilty to your employer, and you might face the back door as fast as you came in through the front door.
Avoid saturation of information: Most people seem to think that the more you know, the more you can offer, while in real sense the more you know, the bit less you can offer. You have to be able to tell how relevant all the information you have is in you job. It is of no need to know so much and not be able to use it in your job. Stick to the subject, you better know less and be more accurate and relevant. Avoiding flooding your mind with all kinds of information. It is good to always ask yourself, 'if all the information i have on this topic is sieved?, how much will be left for relevant use?'. Think quality, not quantity.:-)
Create a startegy: It is essential to have own strategy that will be easier for you to follow depending on your goals and your workload. Most of us go to work and there are many people to seek advice from, they all give their advice based on their own strategies. Take their advice, find your own strategy!! or else you end up being a copy cat. We all have differences, what works for one doesn't work for another, thats what brings different approaches. Find your path to your own home. It's the easier way home. If your job involves doing the same things everyday, Learn the routine, Follow the routine for easier days as they come.:-)
Give yourself time to grow: Okay, we know we passed the interviews and we are ready to work and show the world what we are made of, but calm down! especially if you are a new worker. It doesn't take a week to be a professional and no one expects you to be perfect. Becoming perfect in a job or being a proffesional doesn't come by luck. We work and grow our way up. Give yourself time to learn new things and time to know your strengths and weaknesses.Give yourself the time to improve your weaknesses. Don't be too hard on yourself!! i know..its easier said than done..but give it a try:-)
Concentrate on one Thing: Yea, we humans want to believe we can multitask, and yes to some level we can, but dont go thinking because you can drive and talk, then you can also drive and text (we all know what this leads to). Learn to concentrate on one thing till its done and then move onto the next. concentrating on many things leaves alot half done, especially when you have some deadline. prioritize your tasks and start with the most important, last with the least important.
Take it easy with you and your workmates: As much as you concentrate, take it easy on your brain. Do not let your workmates distract you and don't also distaract them. A cool enviroment creates an easy and peaceful work environment for all:)
Use reminders/ avoid brain overload: we do not have superpower brains, nooo, we are not computers, so lets come back to earth and allow ourselves be normal. Use of reminders comes in handy, especially if you have tasks coming in daily. Yes, have them in colors, just to brighten your day, stick them on your office board, on the fridge door. Use the reminders on your phones and keep notes on your calendars. No, dont stick them on your bed. Sleep enough, atleast 7 hrs. Hey, and if your memory is that bad(we understand or maybe not), put up an alarm! haha!. This reduces the load on your brain, and keeps you from loosing your mind trying to remember everything! keeps off headaches and stress:-)
If your brain feels fully saturated, take a break, walk around the office, have a 10 min break or even 5 with a colleague and keep work out of topic. stretch and twist around. Yea, u can dance a little(am good at this one). Take time to eat. Remember to eat healthy, take lots of water and keep warm. If stressed over something you can't do, ask for help, talk to your workmates and seek their advice, do not beat yourself up. Be always ready to help others too. Share information among each other to make it easier to everyone. This brings in alot of cooperation among workmates and the more you work together, the more you get to know each other and the more you care about each other, creating a work friendly environment.
Keep a positive atmosphere: Be positive and spread positivity, Be positive about your workmates, Try and find just one thing about them thats positive, say it to them. Try and be positive on other peoples ideas, however much you dread them. Alot of negativity brings people down and makes people angry. If you have to say no or dont agree, give a reason for them to understand your point.
Unwind Afterwork: Do not take your work home!!!(i know am hitting the wall on this one) but try not to take your work. Leave your work in the office. Get to do other things after work. Play with your kids, go for a run or gym. Have a drink with friends and be easy. Smile a lot, you know..it keeps the wrinkles away, the the most beautiful curve a human being owns:-). Wrok happy. be happy.
