Connecting to another human being!
Five years ago, my country was up in flames! Reason being that a president had been voted in (or whatever happened that they found their way there). Sad thing is, the people who were in power, rich and protected remained rich and protected!. My fellow kenyans, lost their property, their friends, and their homes. They suffered emotional and pysical abuse that has affected their lives directly or indirectly since then to date. It is sad when we have been friends and neighbours long enough in life that it was ok just pop in unannounced and have dinner, to being the same people who slaughtered each other to death because suddenly we had realised that we were from differrent tribes or had originated from differrent parts of the country. We only realised the differrence after the elections!.
We owe it to ourselves to think and analyse the gains we get from these so called politicians. Politics is the dirtiest game we have watched revolve in kenya, from politicians hating on each other and spreading hate speech to them becoming bestfriends overnight and forming coalitions so as to gain power and share the wealthy life of politicians after being voted in. I wish that we kenyans can form coalitions againist them for our own benefits. I wish we could all manage to secure our children's dreams as their children have acquired their dreams, yet we don't think carefully. We listen to them, vote for them and 1 yr after elections start complaining that the goverment does nothing to help the mwanainchi(common kanyan) yet they are enjoying power on behalf of our votes. We should think wisely, know that OUR VOTES ARE OUR RIGHTS and not our pass to slavery. We live in a country where people are starving to death yet all members of parliament live tax free.A country where you have to know someone who knows someone so your 'things' can be quickly sorted out! A country where people die in emergency rooms because they won't take you in without the required deposit. A country where many diseases that can be treated are overlooked. I wish, we could just get things worked out for one reason; that we are KENYANS irrespective of anything we should remain kenyans and most of all be human to one another.
Two years ago, i met one couple that will never forget what happened 5 yrs ago. They were married while teenegers and left their city for a city far away to settle. They built a home, built a seris of businesses, learnt the local language, had children and friends in their new city. 42yrs later their neighbors and friends suddenly realised they were from a different part of kenya and sent them packing, their businesses were burnt down and they went back to their village 42 yrs later to seek help. It was the hardest thing they ever went through in life, from owning businesses to sleeping in their brothers sitting room on a single matress. It was sad to watch them, it broke my heart into little tiny hurtfull pieces to watch their tears flow. They, and so many others suffered because of a VOTE. Remember: Your vote should be your right, not your pass to slavery. I am hopimg for wise voting come 2013! Oh! we are here already. Vote brightly.I am sad because even that am a registered diaspora voter, they have denied me a right to vote. They did give hope that we will vote but now we have to rely on the other kenyans to set our country straight! I am wishing for peaceful elections and above all, a great outcome..tunaesmake!
Ha! The other day i was reading through twitter and came across outrageous comments againist the gay and lesbians society and the human rights commision of kenya holding the first ever awards to award the gay people who have contributed to our society. The comments i read then were so judgemental and ridiculous. When i had seen the article in the newspaper i was happy, glad that kenyans are finally accesing the right to enjoy their sexuality as their wish and for having a community that understands human rights. To love a fellow woman or man, is about a connection. A connection a human only gets with another human. Yes, just as a woman gets connected to a man, another woman connects to another and vice versa. Women have bestfriends and have alot of emotional connection with them, they don't exactly have the same connection with every woman in the world! Or as men connect with their boys, Its just a human connection! I was in disbelief over such a comment, " This is it! We are officially beginning to be immoral as a country, lets not let immorality invade our coutry". Wow! It made me laugh, and i mean tears of sadness!. Immorality?,immorality is now begininng just because gay peopleare getting to enjoy their rights?. In a country where we read papers and there are hundreds of children raped, grandmothers raped to death? A country where over 80% of married men have sidekicks? (mipango ya kando) , in a country where we have soo many single mothers because their partners walked out on them?. Immorality has not just come because gay people are coming out!.
The point is we have chosen to ignore the issue and we pretend it doesn't exist while it's been there since the beginning of time. Everyone has a right to live as they wish, the only way its wrong is if it hurts you as an individual or hurts other people! If it actually makes two people happy? then, why not? Says who it's wrong? Its just nobody's business. I read a certain column related to this issue in the newspaper that reminded people that, just like gay people are now outcasts in our society, not so long ago, people of african descent were regarded as subhuman( not really human), in Apartheid Southafrica before 1996 (imagine, we all remember this). The gay will see in the mirror a person who could not vote in the united states or go to the same schools with a white just several decades ago,. They will see a person who wasn't allowed in certain parts of Nairobi before 1963. They will see a person who wasn't allowed to buy 'mzungu(european beer) in Kenya in the 1950's. Why would we then, as africans, not be the most understanding people of the minorities in the society, after all we have gone through discrimination wise?
They ask, so where do we draw the line?, from right and wrong?. I say! if it makes you happy, whatever you choose in life and it doesn't break your bone or any other person's for that matter, then its right for you. If it hurts another, well then it' just not right. This brings up a question about what is accepted in a culture and society. i do believe in maintaining cultures and our society, But surely some of this things are just funny. I believe culture should make us proud and should be something other people come to see and enjoy too. Most people listen to cultural stories and end up in tears because they are so sad. We hang onto things and rules that were set up by great men who lived in the 1820s, alot has changed since then, it could have been the best rules for them then, and here we are in the 21st century following them, i maintain the fun part of my culture, i let go the sad parts that hurt human beings and i adjust to life that will make another human being smile! period! Remember what is right for you doesnt have to be right for everybody. Respect everyone's different opinion. The beauty of the world, and life is that we are all different, and we should all celebrate our differences.
Religion and beliefs are more confusing nowadays than ever before! what happened to those times where church was respected?. In my years of adulthood churches have increased more than the years i have lived, religions fighting the other because every religion believes they are right and want to transform the others to join them! huh! its tiring!. Religious leaders and followers are being accused of everything around, yet they should lead with examples. I do believe we are what we are because of where we were born or, and where we were brought up. Nobody knows for sure which religion is right and which is wrong. I personally believe we should respect each others beliefs and religions however much we dont agree with them because, guess what, they also dont agree to ours or yours! and as most say we will anyway stand alone to answer for our lives. So, let's do it best, be good if not best. Treat each human being with respect. Connect to our families, connect to our friends, connect to our villages, connect to our cities, to our countries, to our continents, and to your world!. It will be easier if we just made it a better place for us to live in. Keep connecting to the Human Spirit:)
